Why turn-based RPGs feel right at home on mobile

Turn-based combat gets a bad reputation as old-fashioned, but on a phone it makes perfect sense. You can think, make a move, lock the screen, come back later. No reflexes required, no lost progress.

Ember of the Old Realm reminded me how well this works. The battles reward planning over speed, so I could play a few turns waiting for the kettle and pick up exactly where I left off.

The best mobile RPGs keep their menus tidy. On a small screen, a cluttered battle UI is the fastest way to ruin a good system. Ember keeps things readable, which matters more than any fancy effect.

If action combat on a touchscreen frustrates you, give the turn-based crowd a proper look. It might be the format you've been missing.
